On the Road: Day 4

Keeping this one short! Mostly pics. We traveled through 3 states today: Texas (part B), New Mexico, and Arizona! We found one city absolutely STUNNING - El Paso, I'm looking at you! And we did an Atlas Obscura!

Y'all, El Paso is gorgeous!!!! Fell in love with how beautiful that place is! It has a lot of people in a small space, yet it feels so open! And the pride with which they decorate their interstate is something to behold. There is no place that is visually uninteresting and, in fact, far too many places that beg to be photographed!

Here are some other beautiful sights along our way, including, but not limited to: a dust storm, and Exit 0, a scary and unexpected CBP stop that ended up being nothing, and the state welcome signs!

Today's Atlas Obscura is I-19 - America's Only Metric Interstate! After a short-lived attempt to bring America in line with the rest of the world, this road was left in metric. According to Atlas Obscura's website

The United States remains one of only three countries that have not officially adopted the metric system. America’s refusal to adopt the metric system has not been for lack of trying, however.

In 1975, Congress passed the Metric Conversion Act, which declared metric as the preferred system of the United States. The U.S. Metric Board was created to implement this conversion. In keeping with this plan, road signs on Interstate 19, connecting Tucson, Arizona, to Nogales, Mexico, were changed so that distances were posted in kilometers. It remains to this day the only highway in America with distances posted solely in kilometers.

America’s metric experiment proved to be short lived. The Metric Conversion Act and U.S. Metric Board were dismantled only seven years after they were created. Forty years later, America remains committed to its customary system of measurement.

These are the Atlas Obscura pictures! Please note that the second photo has TWO mile markers: one is KM58 and the other is Mile36!

And, as always, some of Mom's oopsie pics....

Until tomorrow!

Take a leap; choose JOY!!
